Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2647

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah, some people of Quraysh came to him and said: O Muhammad, we are your allies and your people, and some of our slaves have fled and joined you; they have no longing for Islam, rather they have run away to escape work, so return them to us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: O Messenger of Allah, they are speaking the truth. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "What is your opinion?" And he too said the same as Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people of Quraysh, Allah will surely send against you a man whose heart Allah has tested for faith; he will strike your necks for the sake of the religion." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, is it me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Is it me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather it is the one who is mending the sandal in the mosque." He (peace and blessings be upon him) had given his sandal to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to mend. Then Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Take heed! I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Do not lie about me, for whoever lies about me will enter the Fire."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: With this wording and context, this chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sharik al-Nakha'i is alone in this narration, and he is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory); he created inconsistency (idtirab) in the text by inserting one hadith into another. This same hadith was narrated from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir by "Aban bin Salih" (who is a trustworthy narrator) at no. (2608), in which it is stated explicitly that this incident belongs to the "Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah", and in which 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is not mentioned in the warning given to Quraysh.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: As for the other hadith, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated it as marfu' with these words: "Among you is one who will fight over the interpretation (ta'wil) of the Qur'an (against its wrong interpretation) just as I fought over its revelation". It also contains the story of Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) hoping for (istishraf) this merit, and this narration will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (4671), and its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (2/ 1336) and al-Nasa'i (8362) narrated it by way of Aswad bin 'Amir, and al-Tirmidhi (3715) by way of Waki' bin al-Jarrah; both of them transmit it from Sharik al-Nakha'i with this same chain. Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih gharib".
Reference / Source: This narration will come later at no. (8013) by way of Abu Nu'aym and Abu Ghassan from Sharik al-Nakha'i.
Note / Clarification: In this regard, see the earlier narration no. (2591).
Details of the narration: Zayd bin Yuthay' narrated from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) (al-Nasa'i: 8403) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Banu Wali'ah (a tribe of Kindah) must desist from their doings, or else I will send to them a man who is like myself (like my own soul); he will carry out my command among them, kill their fighters and take their offspring captive". Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was suddenly startled when 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) seized my waistband (hujzah) from behind and asked: Whom does he (peace and blessings be upon him) mean? I said: He does not mean you, nor your companion (Abu Bakr); rather he means "the one mending the sandal", and at that time 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was mending a sandal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain has some weakness (lin); Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i is alone in narrating from Zayd bin Yuthay', and Zayd's hearing from Abu Dharr is not known.
Important point: The last portion of the hadith of this chapter, "Do not lie against me", was narrated by Imam Ahmad (2/ 629, 630, 1000, 1001, 1292), al-Bukhari (106) and Muslim (1) with the chain of Shu'bah from Mansur.
