It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Battle of Khaybar. A detachment went out and brought back a man who had some goats that he was herding. They brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke with him at length. The man said: I believe in you and in the message you have brought. But, O Messenger of Allah, what will become of these goats? For they are a trust and they belong to people, whether one or two or more than that. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Throw pebbles at their faces; they will go back to their owners on their own." So he took a handful of pebbles, or dust, and threw it at their faces, and they ran off until every goat had entered its owner's house. Then the man advanced to the battle line and was struck by an arrow which killed him as a martyr, although he had never performed a single prostration for Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take him into the tent." So he was placed in the tent of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished (his task), he went in to him, then came out and said: "The Islam of your companion was excellent. When I went in to him, two of his wives from the wide-eyed houris (hur al-'in) were with him."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This narration is "sahih" (on the strength of its supporting reports), but this particular chain is da'if because of "Shurahbil bin Sa'd". Important point: Supporting reports for this account are narrated, which is why Imam al-Dhahabi declared it "hasan or sahih" in "Tarikh al-Islam" (1/ 281). We say that this statement of Imam al-Dhahabi is better than his statement in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", in which he declared Shurahbil to be accused (muttaham), based on the statement of Ibn Abi Dhi'b. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 143) and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (4/ 220-221) via the author (al-Hakim) with this same chain. Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (241) with the chain of Yunus bin 'Abd al-A'la from 'Abd Allah bin Wahb. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the "mursal" narrations of Musa bin 'Uqbah and 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr, which are in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (4/ 219-220). There is no harm in the narrators of the mursal narration of Musa bin 'Uqbah (they are acceptable). 1/ 92. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another supporting report for it is the mursal narration of Ishaq bin Yasar al-Muttalibi, which is mentioned in Ibn al-Athir's "Usd al-Ghabah" (1/ 92). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Without the story of the goats, it is also supported by the sahih hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), which has preceded with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (2494).
