It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Badr and met the enemy. When he had defeated them, one group of Muslims pursued them and began killing them, one group surrounded the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (so that the enemy could not attack), and one group took possession of the army's camp and goods. When Allah had sufficed them against the enemy and those who had done the killing returned, they said: These spoils are ours, because we killed the enemy and it was through us that Allah defeated them. Those who had surrounded the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah, you are not more entitled to them than we are; they are ours, because we were guarding the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so that the enemy could not cause him any harm. And those who had taken possession of the camp and goods said: You are not more entitled to them than we are; we took possession of the camp and goods. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "They ask you about the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war belong to Allah and the Messenger, so fear Allah and set right your mutual relations" [Surah Al-Anfal: 1], up to where He said: "if you are believers." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed that wealth equally among them.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it, and it has a supporting narration (shahid) through Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Qurashi which is also sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the handwritten manuscripts this name is distorted and written as "Muhammad".
Grading: Because of 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith (Ibn 'Abd Allah bin 'Ayyash), this chain is "hasan" in corroborations and supporting reports, and this hadith of his has supporting reports. Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Abu Sallam" refers to Mamtur al-Habashi, and "Abu Umamah" refers to the Companion Sudayy bin 'Ajlan (may Allah be pleased with him). Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it at (4855) by way of Muhammad bin al-Muthanna from Muhammad bin Jahdam with this same chain. Details of the narration: Ibn Hibban's narration contains the additional allotment (tanfil) of a quarter (rub') and a third (thuluth) of the spoils, and other additions that are not in our present hadith. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ahmad (37/ 22762) narrated it by way of Abu Ishaq al-Fazari, but he did not mention "Makhul" in the chain. The correct view is that "Makhul" should be mentioned, as Isma'il bin Ja'far did here, because Isma'il was supported in this by al-Mughirah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, Ibn Abi al-Zinad and Muhammad bin Fulayh. Sufyan al-Thawri also narrated it in the same way in Ahmad (37/ 22726), Ibn Majah and al-Tirmidhi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration will come next by way of Muhammad bin Ishaq from 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith, but in it the name "Abu Sallam" has been dropped from the chain, whereas it is established in the narration of all the other students of 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith; so the correct view is that it should be mentioned. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the sahih hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which has preceded at no. (2627). Note / Clarification: "Al-ghirrah" (with a kasrah under the ghayn) means "heedlessness". Note / Clarification: The words of the hadith "'an fuwaq" mean: he distributed the spoils in a time as short as the interval between two milkings of a she-camel (the time of rest). Important point: One view is that it means preference (unequal shares) in the distribution, but the first view (a short time) is more correct, as is clear from the narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq, which mentions "sawa'" (equality). Note / Clarification: "Ahdaqu" means: they surrounded or encircled.
