Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 261

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever separates from the Jama'ah (community) even by a handspan has thrown off the collar of Islam from his neck, until he returns (to the Jama'ah)." And he said: "Whoever dies while there is no Imam of the (Muslim) Jama'ah over him, his death is a death of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance)." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon and said: "O people! I will be your forerunner at the Pool (the one who arrives first to receive you). Its extent is as the distance between Kufah and the Black Stone, and its vessels are as numerous as the stars. And I saw some people of my Ummah: when they came near me, a man appeared and took them away from me. Then another group came, and he did the same with them. So none of them succeeded (in reaching the Pool) except a few, like animals strayed from the herd (very few)." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Prophet of Allah! Am I among them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather they are people who will come after you and will turn back on their heels (from the religion)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and Hajjaj bin Muhammad also narrated it from al-Layth, but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the name here is written "Hasan", which is a mistake, because with al-Hakim it recurs in several other places as "Bishr", as we have established here.
Note / Clarification: In any case, we could not find a biography (tarjamah) of this narrator.

Grading: With this wording, this chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although a group narrated from Bishr bin Sahl al-Labbad, as occurs in the chains, no criticism or accreditation of him has been transmitted; so he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown standing), yet he is taken into account in corroborations and supporting reports, and he has been corroborated in some of his wording.
Identification of names: Al-Layth is Ibn Sa'd, and Yahya bin Sa'id is al-Ansari.
Important point: The first part of this narration will come with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (408) via Abu Isma'il Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Tirmidhi from Abu Salih; that chain is hasan, in sha' Allah, since Abu Salih Abd Allah bin Salih is hasan in hadith in corroborations and supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Its first part (about leaving the Jama'ah) was narrated by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "al-Faqih wa al-Mutafaqqih" (433) via Ibrahim bin al-Haytham from Abu Salih.
Grading: Ibrahim bin al-Haytham is "la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him).
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban also narrated it in "al-Majruhin" (2/13-14) with the chain Abd Allah bin Wahb from Ibn Lahi'ah from Ubayd Allah bin Abi Ja'far from Nafi'.
Grading: This chain is hasan, because Ibn Wahb's narration from Ibn Lahi'ah counts among his sound hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something like this first part was narrated by al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'" (1134) via al-Sha'bi from Ibn Umar.
Grading: Its chain is fit to be graded hasan.
Reference / Source: Muslim (1851) and others narrated something similar via the two routes of Nafi' and Aslam (the client of Umar) from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever withdraws his hand from obedience will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with no excuse, and whoever dies without a pledge of allegiance on his neck dies the death of Jahiliyyah."
Note / Clarification: For more, see "Musnad Ahmad" (10/5386 and 5897) and Ibn Hibban (4578).
Details of the narration: From the second part, the story of the Pond (al-Hawd) and the number of its vessels, without mention of its breadth, was narrated by al-Ramahurmuzi in "al-Muhaddith al-Fasil" (520) via Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Tirmidhi from Abu Salih.
Grading: Its chain is hasan, in sha' Allah.
