أخبرنا عبد الرحمن بن حمدان الجَلّاب بهمذان، حدثنا هلال بن العلاء الرَّقي، حدثنا عبد الله بن جعفر، حدثنا عبيد الله بن عمرو، عن زيد بن أبي أُنيسة، عن عمرو بن مُرَّة، عن إبراهيم قال: أراد الضحاك بن قيس أن يستعمل مسروقًا، فقال له عُمارة بن عُقبة: أتستعمل رجلًا من بقايا قَتَلةِ عثمان؟ فقال له مسروق: حدثنا عبد الله ابن مسعود - وكان في أنفُسنا موثوقَ الحديث - أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ لما أراد قتلَ أبيك قال: مَن للصِّبْية؟ قال: "النارُ"، قد رضيتُ لك ما رضِيَ لك رسول الله ﷺ (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i that al-Dahhak bin Qays intended to appoint Masruq to some office. Umarah bin Uqbah said to him: "Are you appointing as governor a man who is one of the remnants of the killers of Uthman?" Masruq replied to him: "Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, and he was, in our view, a truthful narrator, that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to kill your father (Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt), he asked: '(After my death) what will become of the children?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The Fire' (that is, their abode is Hell). So I am pleased for you with what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased with for you."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(2) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد حسن من أجل هلال بن العلاء الرَّقِّي، وهو متابع، وإبراهيم -وهو ابن يزيد النخعي - روايته عن مسروق - وهو ابن الأجدع - معروفة، فالظاهر أنه سمع هذا الخبر منه، وإن كان صورته الإرسال والله تعالى أعلم. عبد الله بن جعفر: هو الرَّقِّي.
Grading: The hadith is sahih and the chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hilal bin al-Ala' al-Raqqi is corroborated. Ibrahim al-Nakha'i's narration from Masruq (Ibn al-Ajda') is well known, so apparently he heard this report from him, even though on the face of it it looks mursal. Abd Allah bin Ja'far is "al-Raqqi".
وأخرجه أبو داود (2686) عن علي بن الحسين الرَّقِّي، عن عبد الله بن جعفر، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2686) narrated it with the chain of Ali bin al-Husayn al-Raqqi from Abd Allah bin Ja'far.
