Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2597

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rabah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went on a military expedition in which Khalid bin al-Walid was the commander of the vanguard. Rabah and his companions passed by a slain woman who had been killed in the vanguard's action. They all stood by her, marvelling at her build, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived there. The people made way for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw her, he said: "Alas! This one was not among those who fight." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the faces of the people and said to one man: "Go and catch up with Khalid bin al-Walid and tell him that he must by no means kill any child (offspring) or any hired labourer (servant)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is "hasan" because of Isma'il bin Abi Uways (Isma'il bin Abd Allah) and Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, and both of them are corroborated (supported).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): About the narrator "al-Muraqqa'", Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari said that he was an approved (mardiyy) man; Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and Imam al-Dhahabi declared him trustworthy.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at (25/15993, 29/17612) via the route of Ibrahim bin Abi al-Abbas and at (25/15994, 29/17611) via the route of Husayn bin Muhammad (both narrating from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also, Imam Ahmad (25/15992 etc.), Ibn Majah (2842), al-Nasa'i (8572) and Ibn Hibban (4789) narrated it via the route of al-Mughirah bin Abd al-Rahman al-Hizami from Abu al-Zinad, and this chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ahmad narrated it via the route of Abd al-Razzaq from Ibn Jurayj, in which Ibn Jurayj says "ukhbirtu" (I was informed), so this chain is "munqati'" (broken).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Sufyan al-Thawri mentions Hanzalah al-Katib (the brother of Rabah bin al-Rabi'), but according to Ibn Abi Shaybah and al-Bukhari (al-Tarikh al-Kabir 3/314), Sufyan made an error ("wahm") here, while Ibn Hibban declared both narrations sahih.
Grading: The chain of Abu Dawud (2669) and al-Nasa'i (8571), Umar bin Muraqqa' from his father from his grandfather, is "sahih".
Note / Clarification: "Dhurriyyah" means a person's offspring, whether male (sons) or female (daughters).
Note / Clarification: "Asif" means a hired labourer or slave who is kept for menial work.
