Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2596

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Humayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out (on a military expedition). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had left Thaniyyat al-Wada' behind, a battalion appeared there. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who are these people?" The Companions said: "These are Banu Qaynuqa' (Jews), who are of the clan of Abdullah bin Salam." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have they accepted Islam?" They said: "No, rather they remain on their religion." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell them to go back, for we do not seek the help of polytheists."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Manuscript (S) has "Sa'id", and this name of his is also mentioned in some other narrations.

General principle: In manuscripts (Z), (S) and ('A) the name is like this, and it is likewise narrated from al-Hakim in al-Bayhaqi's al-Sunan al-Kubra (9/ 37). Grammatically it is either accusative as an object or nominative as a predicate, and both forms are acceptable.

Grading: Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqamah al-Laythi and Sa'd bin al-Mundhir bin Abi Humayd al-Sa'idi.
Reference / Source: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared it hasan in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (4263).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi (9/ 37) from al-Hakim, Ibn Sa'd in al-Tabaqat (2/ 45), Ishaq bin Rahawayh (al-Matalib al-'Aliyah: 4263), Ibn Abi Asim (2068), Ibn al-Mundhir (6165), al-Tahawi (2580), al-Tabarani (5142) and al-Hazimi (pp. 218-219) via various routes from al-Fadl bin Musa.
