Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2589

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the people returned from the fighting, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) searched for Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him). A man said: "I saw him near those trees, and he was saying: 'I am the lion of Allah and of His Messenger. O Allah, I declare myself innocent before You of the evil that these (Abu Sufyan and his companions) have brought, and I apologise to You for the cowardice (defeat) of these (Muslims).'" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards him. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his side, he wept, and when he saw the mutilation (muthlah) that had been done to his body, he (peace and blessings be upon him) sobbed. Then he said: "Is there no shroud for him?" A man from the Ansar threw one of his sheets over him, then another man from the Ansar threw his sheet over him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jabir, this cloth is for your father (Abdullah bin Haram), and this one is for my uncle Hamzah." Then Sayyiduna Hamzah was brought, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed his funeral prayer. Then the other martyrs would be brought and placed beside Hamzah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray over them all; then those martyrs would be lifted away while Hamzah remained there, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had performed the funeral prayer over all the martyrs (together with Hamzah). Jabir says: I returned with a very heavy heart, because my father had left debts and dependants upon me. When night came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me and said: "O Jabir, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has brought your father to life and spoken to him directly." I asked: "Did He really speak to him?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah said to him: '(O My servant,) make a wish.' He said: 'My wish is that You return my soul to me, recreate my body as it was, and send me back to Your Prophet, so that I may fight in Your cause and be martyred once again.' Allah said: 'I have decreed that they will not return (to the world).'" And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the leader of the martyrs in the sight of Allah will be Hamzah."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because of the weakness of Abu Hammad al-Hanafi (al-Mufaddal bin Sadaqah). Although the hadith of Ibn Aqil is hasan in corroborating chains, the mention of the funeral prayer over the martyrs of Uhud is reported by him or by Abu Hammad alone, whereas the correct view is that the prayer was not offered over them.
Details of the narration: The story of the shroud of Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was narrated by Imam Ahmad (22/ 14521) and al-Tirmidhi (997): the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded him in a striped cloak (namirah), which was only a single garment.
Important point: According to the correct narration, Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) brought two cloths, and Hamzah was shrouded in one of them. This chain is hasan.

Details of the narration: The story of Abd Allah bin Amr leaving a debt will come at no. (7273); it was also narrated by Ahmad (23/ 15005, 23/ 14935), al-Bukhari (2709, 2127, 2781, 3580, 4053, 6250), al-Nasa'i (6434, 6430-6432), Ibn Hibban (6536), Abu Dawud (5187), al-Tirmidhi (2711, 3010) and Ibn Majah (190), all from Jabir bin Abd Allah. The story of Allah Most High bringing him back to life and speaking to him was narrated by Ahmad (23/ 14881) via Ibn Aqil.
Grading: This narration will come later at no. (4976) with a hasan chain.
Important point: The words at the end of the hadith, "The chief of the martyrs is Hamzah", are narrated later at no. (4945).
Grading: When its various routes are combined, this narration becomes "hasan", as we have made clear in our verification of "Fath al-Bari" (12/ 186).
Important point: On the question of the prayer over the martyrs of Uhud, the most authentic report from Jabir, in al-Bukhari, is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to be buried in their blood-stained state without being washed and without the prayer being offered.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From narrations of other Companions besides Jabir, such as Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr (whose chain is hasan), the offering of the prayer is also established, and it is likewise supported by the mursal narration of Imam al-Sha'bi.
Important point: Imam Ibn al-Qayyim says that what appears is that the prayer was not offered at the time of burial. Since Jabir's own father was among those martyrs, his testimony is more reliable than that of others.
