It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was shrouded in a small striped sheet (namirah). The sheet was so small that when they drew it over his head, his feet were uncovered, and when they drew it over his feet, his head was uncovered. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that they draw the sheet towards his head and put idhkhir (grass) over his feet. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that I feared Safiyyah (Hamzah's sister) would be grief-stricken, I would have left Hamzah (on the field itself) and not buried him, so that Hamzah would be gathered (on the Day of Resurrection) from the bellies of the birds and beasts of prey."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: On the basis of supporting reports this hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi, and there is no harm in its narrators. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Usamah bin Zayd al-Laythi made an error in this narration; he was contradicted by al-Layth bin Sa'd, who narrated it from al-Zuhri, from Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik, from Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him). In memory and precision al-Layth ranks above Usamah, so al-Layth's version is the correct one, as Imam al-Bukhari stated decisively in "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (252). Reference / Source: For further detail see narration no. (1367), where two routes of Usamah bin Zayd are mentioned. Details of the narration: This narration will come later in abridged form at no. (4948) via the route of Uthman bin Umar from Usamah bin Zayd.
