It is narrated from Harith bin Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on one of his military expeditions when he passed by the tribe of Muzaynah. A slave belonging to one of their women followed him. When, along the way, he greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you so-and-so?" He said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you intend?" He said: "I want to wage jihad with you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Has your mistress given you permission?" He said: "No." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go back to her, for if you die before returning to her, your example will be that of a slave who does not pray. And convey my salam to her." So he went back and informed his mistress. She asked: "By Allah, did he himself (peace and blessings be upon him) order you to convey salam to me?" He said: "Yes." She said: "Now go back and wage jihad with him."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): It has two defects: first, that Abd Allah bin Abi Umayyah is majhul, and second, that it is "mursal". Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar noted its being mursal in "al-Isabah" (2/ 195) but overlooked the narrator's being unknown. Only Ibn Jurayj narrated from him, and no one besides Ibn Hibban called him thiqah. In some places his name is also given as "Abd Rabbih". Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it (9/ 22) via Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Harith bin Abi Usamah narrated it in his "Musnad" (Bughyat al-Bahith: 662), and via his route al-Khatib al-Baghdadi transmitted it in "al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq" (789) with the chain of Mu'awiyah bin Amr from Abu Ishaq al-Fazari.
