Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2579

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Uhud, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shooting arrows, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was behind him. Abu Talhah was a skilled archer. Whenever he shot, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would raise his blessed head to see where his arrow landed. Then Abu Talhah would thrust out his chest and say: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you! (Do not raise your blessed head,) lest an arrow strike you. My chest is a shield before your chest." Abu Talhah would put himself forward in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and say: "O Messenger of Allah, I am strong and sturdy, so command me with whatever you wish."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but he did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The word "wadd" found in the manuscripts is derived, according to the dialect of Tamim, from "watid" (peg/stake); that is, Abu Talhah planted himself like a peg in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that the arrows of the polytheists would not strike him (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to some, it is an alteration (tahrif) of "yashur", which means selling one's life to Allah or displaying one's strength.

Grading: The chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thabit is Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani.

Details of the narration: It will come later at no. (5607) with the chain of Humayd al-Tawil.

Important point: Since al-Bukhari and Muslim have narrated it, there is no room for an objection (istidrak) against them.
