Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2577

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) faced the polytheists on the day of the Battle of Hunayn, he (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his mule and went (onto the field) on foot.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. It is established only through this route that he (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his mount and fought on foot.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2658), Ibn Hibban (4775) and al-Bukhari (3042) narrated it.
Details of the narration: The wording is that Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith was holding the reins of the mule of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when the polytheists surrounded him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (2930), Muslim (1776) and al-Nasa'i (8575) and (10366) narrated it via the route of Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, and Muslim (1776) via the route of Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah, both from Abu Ishaq.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the narration of Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih Muslim (1777) and Ibn Hibban (6520).

Important point: Al-Bukhari and Muslim have narrated it; although it does not contain the word "tarajjul" (going on foot) but rather the word "nuzul" (dismounting), which has the same meaning, so the objection (istidrak) against them is not valid.
