Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2567

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to travelling in the last part of the night, for the earth is folded up at night (that is, the distance is covered quickly)."
Imam al-Hakim says: I had earlier mentioned another chain of this and was searching for a supporting narration (shahid) for it; so this is its supporting narration, provided it is free from (weakness on the part of the narrator) Khalid bin Yazid al-Umari.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence), and its chain is "hasan" because of Abu Ja'far al-Razi (Isa bin Abi Isa).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here Imam al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi erred in identifying the narrator, in that they wrote him as "al-Umari", whereas the correct view is that he is "Khalid bin Yazid al-Ataki" (the companion of al-Lu'lu'), who is saduq (truthful) and hasan in hadith. Al-Umari, on the other hand, is accused of lying.
Reference / Source: Al-Diya' al-Maqdisi, in "al-Mukhtarah" (6/ 2118), identified him correctly as "the companion of al-Lu'lu'".
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud narrated it (2571) with the chain of Amr bin Ali al-Fallas from Khalid bin Yazid.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration has passed at no. (1647) via the route of Imam al-Zuhri from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him); although its being "mursal" is more correct, it strengthens this hadith.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author narrated it there via the route of Qabisah bin Uqbah from al-Layth as well; it is not understood why only the route of "Ruwaym" was relied upon here!
