It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Our Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, is greatly pleased with (marvels at) a man who went out on an expedition in the cause of Allah, then his companions were defeated and fell back, but he realised his duty and went back until his blood was shed. Then Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, says to His angels: 'Look at this servant of Mine. He went back out of longing for what is with Me (of reward) and out of fear of what is with Me (of punishment), until his blood was shed.'"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Murrah al-Hamdani is Murrah bin Sharahil al-Hamdani. Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud narrated it (2536) via Musa bin Isma'il with this same chain. 2/ 413. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (7/ 3949) and Ibn Hibban (2557) and (2558) narrated it through various routes from Hammad bin Salamah. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (2/ 413), Za'idah bin Qudamah corroborates Hammad bin Salamah. Grading: This narration is "mawquf" (i.e. it is the saying of a Companion). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Nasa'i transmitted it (10637) via the route of Sharik bin Abd Allah, but Abu Ubaydah's hearing from his father (Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)) is not established, so this chain is munqati' (broken). Note / Clarification: For its full takhrij and technical discussion, see our verification (tahqiq) of "Sunan Abi Dawud".
