أخبرنا أحمد بن جعفر القطيعي، حدثنا عبد الله بن أحمد أحمد بن حنبل، حدثني أبي، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مَهدي، حدثنا محمد بن أبي الوضّاح، عن العلاء بن عبد الله بن رافع (2)، عن حَنان بن خارجة، عن عبد الله بن عمرو، أنه قال: يا رسول الله، أخبرني عن الجهاد والغزو، فقال: "يا عبدَ الله بنَ عمرو، إن قاتلت صابرًا محتسِبًا، بعثك الله صابرًا محتسبًا، وإن قاتلتَ مُرائيًا مُكاثرًا، بعثك الله مُرائيًا مُكاثرًا، يا عبدَ الله ابن عمرو، على أيِّ حالٍ قاتلتَ أو قُتلتَ، بعثكَ اللهُ على تلك الحالِ" (1). حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about jihad and military expeditions." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abdullah bin Amr, if you fight with patience and seeking reward, Allah will raise you as one who was patient and sought reward. And if you fight to show off and to boast (of numbers and strength), Allah will raise you as one who showed off and boasted. O Abdullah bin Amr, in whatever state you fight or are killed, Allah will raise you in that very state."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: نافع، والتصويب من "إتحاف المهرة"" (11649)، وفاقًا لرواية البيهقي في "السنن الكبرى" 9/ 186 عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم بإسناده الذي هنا.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name was altered (tahrif) to "Nafi'", while the correct name has been restored from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (11649).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This correction also agrees with the narration of Imam al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 186), which he transmitted from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with the same chain that is found here.
(1) إسناده ضعيف لجهالة حنان بن خارجة على اختلافٍ في رفع الحديث ووقفه كما بيناه في تحقيقنا على سنن أبي داود (2556).
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is that Hanan bin Kharijah is majhul (of unknown status). There is also disagreement over whether this hadith is "marfu'" (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) or "mawquf" (a saying of a Companion).
