Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2538

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I was sitting in the Hijr when a man came to me and asked me about "By the chargers panting". I said to him: "It refers to the horses that raid the enemy in the path of Allah and then seek shelter at night, when the people prepare their food and kindle their fires." The man turned away from there and went to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), who was sitting below the Zamzam water-station, and asked him about 'al-'Adiyat'. He said: "Did you ask anyone about it before me?" He said: "Yes, I asked Ibn Abbas, and he said it refers to the horses that raid in the path of Allah." He said: "Go and call him to me." The narrator says: When he (Ibn Abbas) came and stood before him, he said: "You give people fatwas without knowledge! By Allah, the first military expedition in Islam was Badr, and we had only two horses: one belonging to Sayyiduna Zubayr and one to Sayyiduna Miqdad bin al-Aswad. So how could they be 'the chargers panting'? Rather, 'the chargers panting' are (the camels hastening during Hajj) from Arafah to Muzdalifah and from Muzdalifah to Mina, and 'raising thereby clouds of dust' refers to the ground when they trample it with their pads and hooves." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "So I withdrew from my view and returned to what Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had said." [Surah al-'Adiyat: 1-4]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it; they used Abu Sakhr, that is, Humayd bin Ziyad, and Abu Mu'awiyah al-Bajali, that is, Ammar bin Abi Mu'awiyah al-Duhni, as evidence.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if because of a break (inqita'), since Ammar al-Duhni did not hear anything from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Sakhr (Humayd bin Ziyad) is also not very reliable, though he has been corroborated. Al-Dhahabi considered this report munkar in "al-Talkhis".
Reference / Source: This narration is also in Abdullah bin Wahb's "al-Jami'" (tafsir: 2/136), where Abdullah bin Ayyash is paired with Abu Sakhr; he is not strong but is taken into account in corroborating narrations.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari and Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it through Yunus bin Abd al-A'la from Ibn Wahb.
Reference / Source: The mention of the horses of al-Zubayr and al-Miqdad at the Battle of Badr will come later in abridged form at numbers (4344) and (5651).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bukhari did not include any narration of Ammar al-Duhni or Abu Sakhr in "Sahih al-Bukhari", though he did narrate from Abu Sakhr in "al-Adab al-Mufrad".
