Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2534

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse of the Qur'an: "Go forth, whether light or heavy" [Surah al-Tawbah: 41], and said: "I see that we have been ordered to go forth in every condition, whether we are old or young." His sons said: "Father! You fought in jihad alongside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until he passed away, and then alongside Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); now we will fight on your behalf." But he refused and set out on a sea voyage until he died. For seven days they could not find an island (on which to bury him). The narrator says: (When they found an island,) there had been no change in the condition of his body.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
