Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2526

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man returned from a journey, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Who was with you?" He said: "I did not take anyone with me (that is, I was alone)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A single rider is a devil, two riders are two devils, and three are a proper travelling party."
Its supporting narration (shahid) is the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), which is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Shu'ayb bin Muhammad and Abd al-Rahman bin Harmalah are both saduq, and their hadith is of hasan grade.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (11/6748, 7007), Abu Dawud (2607), al-Tirmidhi (1674) and al-Nasa'i (8798) narrated it through Imam Malik and others, and al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan.
Note / Clarification: According to al-Khattabi, travelling alone is the act of Satan, or Satan incites one to it, and that is why such a person is called "a devil". When there are three people, they are called a "rakb" (a travelling party).
