Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2523

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped at a place, he would bid it farewell with two rak'ahs when departing from it.
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it, and Uthman bin Sa'd is among those whose hadith are collected.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is da'if because Uthman bin Sa'd and Abd al-Salam bin Hashim in it are weak narrators.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The second narrator (Abd al-Salam) was accused of lying by Abu Hafs Amr bin Ali al-Fallas; however, he has been corroborated, and the real problem is Uthman bin Sa'd.
Reference / Source: This narration has already passed at number (1203) through Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Khuzaymah, and at number (1652) through Abu Asim al-Dahhak from Uthman bin Sa'd.
Note / Clarification: The word "wada'ahu" can be read in two ways: with the dal unstressed ("wada'a"), meaning "to leave", or with the dal doubled ("wadda'a"), meaning "tawdi'", i.e. to bid farewell, just as the last tawaf of the Sacred House is called "tawaf al-wada'" (the farewell circumambulation).
