Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2516

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me behind him on his mount and told me something in confidence which I will not tell anyone. The narrator says: To relieve himself, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) most preferred to screen himself behind a raised place or a cluster of date palms. Once he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the garden of a man from the Ansar, and there was a camel there. When the camel saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it began to groan and tears flowed from its eyes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to it and stroked the back of its head, and it calmed down. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who is the owner of this camel? Whose camel is this?" A young man from the Ansar came forward and said: "O Messenger of Allah! It is mine." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not fear Allah regarding this dumb animal of which Allah has made you the owner? It has complained to me that you keep it hungry and exhaust it by overworking it."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is how it appears in the manuscripts, and likewise in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Sughra" (2918) from the author (al-Hakim); but according to the books of biographies and of takhrij, this narrator is the mawla of al-Hasan bin Ali, and according to one view the mawla of Ali bin Abi Talib. In any case, he is a mawla of the household (of Ali).

Note / Clarification: "Al-dhifrah" (singular of "al-dhifra") refers to the protruding bone behind the ear.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and the chain is hasan because of Ahmad bin Mihran, and he has been corroborated. By Abdullah bin Ja'far is meant Ibn Abi Talib.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/1745), Muslim (342, 2429), Abu Dawud (2549), Ibn Majah (340) and Ibn Hibban (1411) narrated it through Mahdi bin Maymun. Muslim and others, in some places, limited themselves to the part about screening oneself when relieving oneself.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1754) and Ibn Hibban (1412) narrated it through Jarir bin Hazim, but Ibn Hibban did not mention the story of the camel.

Note / Clarification: As mentioned earlier, Muslim narrated it, but he abridged the text.
