It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was holding the she-camel's nose-rein, leading it, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) settled upright upon it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication: 'Allahumma anta al-sahibu fi al-safari, wa al-khalifatu fi al-ahli, Allahumma ishabna bi-suhbatin waqlibna bi-dhimmatin, Allahumma urzuqni qafla al-ardi, wa hawwin 'alayna al-safara, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'i al-safari wa ka'abati al-munqalab' (O Allah, You are our Companion on the journey and the Guardian of our family; O Allah, accompany us with Your companionship and return us under Your protection; O Allah, grant me the folding up of the distance of the earth and make the journey easy for us; O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel and from the grief of the return). Abu Zur'ah said: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was an eloquent Arab; had he wanted to say 'wa'tha'', he could have said it (but he said ''awtha''). He (peace and blessings be upon him) also supplicated: 'Allahumma iqlibna bi-dhimmatin, Allahumma azwi lana al-arda wa sayyirna fiha' (O Allah, return us under Your protection; O Allah, fold up the earth for us and make us travel through it).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
179 - 180. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscript (B) "Wa'tha'" is a corruption; with al-Hakim it is "'Awtha'", as is made clear by the statement of Abu Zur'ah bin Amr bin Jarir.
Grading: The hadith is sahih and the chain is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement about the name of the narrator from Abu Zur'ah bin Amr. Abd al-Jabbar named him "Umayr bin Abdullah" (Ibn Bishr al-Khath'ami), while in one narration of Shu'bah it is "Abdullah bin Bishr" (the father of Umayr), and in the narration of Ibn al-Mubarak he is left unnamed ("so-and-so al-Khath'ami"). Umayr is thiqah and his father is saduq. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith also has another sahih route, but with a difference in wording (such as "itwi lana al-ard" in place of "irzuqni qufl al-ard"). Reference / Source: Al-Mahamili in "al-Du'a" (27) and al-Khatib in "al-Kifayah" narrated, through Ahmad bin Uthman, the wording "Allahumma izwi lana al-ard" (O Allah, fold up the earth for us). Reference / Source: Ahmad (15/9205) and al-Tirmidhi (after 3438) narrated it through Ibn al-Mubarak from Shu'bah, with the wording "Allahumma ishabna bi-nush". Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3438) and al-Nasa'i (5885, etc.) narrated it through Ibn Abi Adi from Shu'bah from Abdullah bin Bishr al-Khath'ami. Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan gharib. Reference / Source: Ahmad (9599), Abu Dawud (2598) and al-Nasa'i (10261) narrated it through Sa'id al-Maqburi from Abu Hurayrah, which also has the addition of seeking refuge from a distressing sight in family and wealth. (2512). Reference / Source: See the earlier narration number (2512). Note / Clarification: The meaning of the words of the supplication "Allahumma ishabna bi-suhbah wa-qlibna bi-dhimmah" is: O Allah, keep us in Your protection during the journey, and return us safely home with Your covenant and security.
