Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah narrates from his father (who was a Companion who fought at Badr) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us out on a sariyyah (military detachment), we had no provisions except a bag of dates. We would divide them handful by handful, until it came down to one date each. I asked: "Father! What good could a single date do you?" He said: "My son! Do not say that, for when even that ran out, we realized its value and felt an intense need for it."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "al-Mas'udi" (Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah) suffered from ikhtilat (deterioration of memory) at the end of his life. Yazid bin Harun and Asim bin Ali heard from him after his ikhtilat, but Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak heard from him before his ikhtilat, because he had already met him in Kufa before 150 AH, whereas the ikhtilat began in 154 AH. According to Imam Ahmad, the hearing of his students in Kufa and Basra from him is sound. We reviewed the narrations of Ibn al-Mubarak in "al-Zuhd" and "al-Jihad" and found nothing munkar in them; moreover, other reliable narrators have corroborated him. Important point: This hadith had been declared weak in "Musnad Ahmad" (in the earlier research) because this narration of Ibn al-Mubarak found with the author had not been come across, so it is to be corrected from here (that is, finding Ibn al-Mubarak's narration has removed the weakness). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at (15692) with the chain Yazid bin Harun from al-Mas'udi, with this same preceding chain. (1935). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the narration of Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) about the detachment (sariyyah) that went towards the coast, whose commander was Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah. When their provisions ran low, the dates were collected; at first Abu Ubaydah gave each man a handful, then he began giving one date each. Jabir said: When even that ran out, we felt its loss. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (2483, 2983) and Muslim (1935) narrated it. Note / Clarification: "Al-Salf" means a large leather bag. Ibn al-Athir says that in one narration it is also given as "al-saff", which means a basket woven from palm leaves.
