Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2503

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Uhud the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Muslims: "Hand arrows to Sa'd. O Sa'd, shoot! May Allah keep your aim true. Shoot, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction: In the manuscripts (Z, S, A) the word has been corrupted into "Isma'il"; the correct word is the one in manuscript (B).

Grading: The hadith is sahih and the narrators are thiqah. There is some disagreement in the transmission from Ibrahim bin Sa'd, but the narration with the intermediary Abd Allah bin Ja'far is the correct one and closer to what is right.
Reference: Imam al-Nasa'i narrated it. In the chain, Zakariyya bin Adi made an error in a name, which Imam al-Mizzi, al-Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar pointed out.
Corroboration: Yahya al-Himmani and Maysarah bin Safwan also corroborated (supported) the mention of the intermediary.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i narrated this narration in his book (no. 9960) with the chain of Ya'qub bin Ibrahim bin Sa'd, from Abd Allah bin Ja'far, with the same (preceding chain and text).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The special feature of this chain is that Ya'qub bin Ibrahim bin Sa'd heard this narration both through his father (Ibrahim bin Sa'd) and directly from Abd Allah bin Ja'far.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (2412) and Imam al-Nasa'i (9955) narrated it with the chain Bukayr bin Mismar from Amir bin Sa'd from his father (Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him)).
Details of the narration: The wording of Sahih Muslim is: "A man from the polytheists had been inflicting heavy losses on the Muslims, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to Sa'd): 'Shoot, may my father and mother be your ransom.' Sa'd said: I drew out for him an arrow that had no head (iron tip), and I shot him; it struck his side and he fell, and his private parts became exposed. Seeing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed until I saw his molar teeth."
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (4055), Ibn Majah (130) and al-Nasa'i (8159, 9953, 9954) narrated it via Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: The wording of Imam al-Bukhari's narration is: "On the day of Uhud the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) scattered out the arrows of his quiver for me and said: 'Shoot, may my father and mother be your ransom.'" While in the narration of the other hadith scholars it is: "On the day of Uhud the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned both his parents together for me and said: 'O Sa'd, shoot, may my father and mother be your ransom.'"
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in the Musnad (1495, 1562), as did al-Bukhari (3725, 4057), Muslim (2412), al-Tirmidhi (2830, 3754) and al-Nasa'i (8158), with the chain Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Sa'd.
Important point: The gist of the wording in al-Nasa'i (8158) is that on the day of Uhud the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned both his parents together for Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: According to linguistic research, the word "انبُلُوا" can be read with either a connecting or a disjunctive hamzah. It is derived from "nabalahu" and "anbalahu", meaning to hand someone arrows. If it is read with a disjunctive hamzah, the ba takes a kasrah.
