It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Soon trials will cover you like pieces of a dark night (black and terrifying). The one who will be saved from these trials is a man who has secluded himself on the top of a high mountain, living on the milk of his goats, or a man at the frontiers holding the reins of his horse, standing firm before the enemy and eating from the provision gained by his sword (the spoils of war)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction of an error: In the manuscripts the name "Nafi' bin Jubayr" has been inserted by mistake between Ibn Khuthaym and Nafi' bin Sarjis, whereas only Ibn Khuthaym narrates from Nafi' bin Sarjis.
Grading: The hadith is sahih and the chain is hasan. Nafi' bin Sarjis is thiqah (according to Ibn Sa'd and Ibn Hibban). Technical note: Among the students of Ibn Khuthaym there is disagreement over whether it is "marfu'" (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) or "mawquf", but those who narrated it as marfu' are hafizes, so its being "marfu'" is what is correct. 1/ 107. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration has already passed at (2410), but there it did not have the restriction "in the time of trials". According to Hafiz Ibn Rajab, that general narration is to be understood in light of the restricted narration here. Linguistic explanation: "Like pieces of the dark night" means each trial will be, in its severity and obscurity, like a dark night in which the way cannot be seen. Linguistic explanation: "Shahiqah" means a high mountain. Linguistic explanation: "Risl" (with a kasrah on the ra) means the milk of goats. Linguistic explanation: "Inan" is the leather strap of a horse's bridle. Linguistic explanation: "Fay' al-sayf" (the fay' of the sword) means spoils of war, which is among the most lawful of earnings.
