Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2489

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best horse is one that is deep black, with a white mark on its forehead, three white feet and a white lower lip, while its right foreleg is free (of whiteness). If such a black one is not available, then a reddish-black one (kumayt) with these same markings."
This is a gharib (singular) sahih (authentic) hadith; the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) used all of its narrators as evidence, but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih; the chain is hasan because of Yahya bin Ayyub al-Ghafiqi. Abu Qilabah al-Raqashi is Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban narrated it. Although in the narration of Ibn Ar'arah (in Ibn Hibban) there is doubt whether it is the narration of Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) or of Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), the correct view is that it is the narration of Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note: This chain of Ibn Lahi'ah is hasan, because Ibn al-Mubarak narrated from him before his books burned, and his early narrations are reliable.
