It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever goes out of his house with the intention of jihad in the way of Allah." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) joined his three fingers together and said: "And where are those who strive in the way of Allah (in their great reward)? Whoever goes out in the way of Allah, then falls from his mount and dies, his reward is established with Allah; and if an animal stings him and he dies, his reward is established with Allah; and whoever dies a natural death," The narrator said: This is an expression (hatf anfihi) that I had not heard from any Arab before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning to die on one's bed, "his reward is established with Allah; and whoever is killed suddenly (on the battlefield), Paradise becomes obligatory for him."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan on the strength of other supporting reports). Technical note: Apart from Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Atik, all the narrators of its chain are acceptable; Ibn Atik's status is unknown. However, Muhammad bin Ishaq has explicitly stated that he heard it (in the narration of Abu Nu'aym), so the only remaining issue is Ibn Atik being unknown. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (16414) narrated it with the chain Yazid bin Harun from Muhammad bin Ishaq. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) (no. 2431): "Three kinds of people are under the guarantee of Allah: a man who goes out as a fighter in the path of Allah" (and the rest of the hadith). Its chain is sahih. (1876). Reference / Source: A similar narration is reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih Muslim (1876). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In the hadith of Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) (Ibn Abi Asim and Abu Ya'la): "Whoever falls from his mount in the path of Allah and dies is a martyr." This is also sahih. Reference / Source: The general narration of Sahih Muslim (1915) is: "Whoever is killed in the path of Allah is a martyr, and whoever dies (a natural death) in the path of Allah is also a martyr." Grading: It is narrated from Yahya bin Abi Kathir as "mursal" that whoever put his foot in the stirrup setting out in the path of Allah, and was then stung by a venomous creature, or thrown by his mount, or died by any death at all, is a martyr. Its narrators are thiqah. (2443). Note / Clarification: See the earlier hadiths of Mu'adh, Anas and Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with them) on this subject (2441-2443). Linguistic explanation: "Al-Qa's" means a blow from which a person dies on the spot, that is, an instant death.
