Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2475

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When your brothers were martyred at the Battle of Uhud, Allah Almighty placed their souls inside green birds that come down to the rivers of Paradise, eat from its fruits, and rest in lamps of gold hanging in the shade of the Throne. When they saw the purity and delight of their food, their drink and their resting place, they said: 'Who will convey to our brothers the message that we are alive in Paradise and are being given provision, so that they do not lose interest in jihad and do not shrink back from battle?' Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'I will convey this message to them on your behalf.'" The narrator said: Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And never think of those who have been killed in the way of Allah as dead" [Surah Al Imran: 169].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Because of Muhammad bin Ishaq the chain is "hasan", since he stated explicitly that he heard it, which removes the suspicion of tadlis. Ibn al-Qattan also declared it hasan.
Technical note: In Imam Ahmad's narration via Ibrahim bin Sa'd, the name "Sa'id bin Jubayr" is missing from the chain, as most of Ibn Ishaq's students reported it.
Technical note: According to Ibn Kathir, the mention of Sa'id bin Jubayr in the chain is better established, and the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri also supports this. The narration of Abu Amir al-Qasim al-Asadi (a student of al-Thawri) is considered in corroborations.
Grading: Imam al-Bayhaqi also narrated it with mention of Sa'id bin Jubayr. Although there is no harm in the narrators, the more correct view is that Isma'il bin Umayyah narrates it through Abu al-Zubayr. This strong corroboration supports the presence of Sa'id bin Jubayr in the chain.
Note / Clarification: A brief narration, mawquf on Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), will come later at no. (3498).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih Muslim (1887).
Note / Clarification: "Yankulu" (with any of the three vowels on the kaf) means to show cowardice or to hold back from jihad.
