Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2468

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me about jihad and military expeditions. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abdullah bin Amr, if you fight with patience and seeking reward, Allah will raise you (on the Day of Resurrection) as one who was patient and sought reward; and if you fight for show and pride, Allah will raise you as one who showed off and took pride. O Abdullah bin Amr, in whatever state you fight or are killed, Allah will raise you in that same state."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. This Muhammad bin Abi al-Waddah is Abu Sa'id Muhammad bin Muslim bin Abi al-Waddah, a trustworthy (thiqah) and reliable (ma'mun) narrator.
