Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2449

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever dies without ever having fought, and without ever having intended in his heart to fight, dies upon a branch of hypocrisy."
Imam Muslim used Wuhayb bin al-Ward as evidence, and this is an important hadith narrated by Abdullah bin al-Mubarak, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Muwajjih is Muhammad bin 'Amr al-Fazari, 'Abdan is 'Abd Allah bin 'Uthman, and Sumayy is Sumayy the freed slave of Abu Bakr bin 'Abd al-Rahman.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (8865), Muslim (1910), Abu Dawud (2502) and al-Nasa'i (4290) narrated it via 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak.
Important point: Since it is in Sahih Muslim, al-Hakim's including it in al-Mustadrak is a slip on his part.
Note / Clarification: Sahih Muslim also has this statement of Ibn al-Mubarak: "We think that this (ruling about dying without having fought) was specific to the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
General principle: According to Imam al-Nawawi this statement is a possibility, while other scholars regard it as general: abandoning jihad resembles the hypocrites, since staying away from jihad is one of the branches of hypocrisy.
