Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2447

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever sets out in the path of Allah (for jihad), and then dies or is killed, is a martyr; or if his horse or camel throws him and kills him, or a venomous creature stings him, or he dies a natural death on his bed in whatever way Allah wills, he is a martyr, and Paradise is surely his."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is weak because of the weakness of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid and his practice of "tadlis al-taswiyah".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Makhul's hearing from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm is doubtful; Imam al-Dhahabi also doubted it, and Abu Hatim denied his hearing from other senior shaykhs of Syria as well.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2499) narrated it through the chain of 'Abd al-Wahhab bin Najdah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In its place the narration of Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih Muslim (1915) suffices, whose words are: "Whoever is killed in the path of Allah is a martyr, and whoever dies (naturally) in the path of Allah is a martyr."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) has passed earlier at number (2431), and its chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of 'Uqbah bin 'Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) (Ibn Abi 'Asim and al-Tabarani) has: "Whoever falls from his mount in the path of Allah and dies is a martyr." Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: "Fasala" means leaving one's house, just as the same word is used in the Qur'an for the setting out of Talut's army.
Note / Clarification: "Waqasahu" means his horse broke his neck; the word is derived from "al-waqs".
Note / Clarification: "Hammah" refers to harmful creatures (snakes and the like) whose venom is deadly, while harmful creatures that are venomous but not deadly are called "sammah" (such as the hornet).
Note / Clarification: "Hatf" means destruction or death.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hani' is Humayd bin Hani', and 'Amr bin Malik is al-Janbi.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2500) narrated it through the chain of Sa'id bin Mansur.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (23954) narrated it via Rishdin bin Sa'd from Abu Hani'.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come again later via Haywah bin Shurayh al-Misri at number (2669 M).
Note / Clarification: "Al-fattan" refers to the trial (fitnah) of the grave, that is, the pressure, questioning and punishment on entering the grave. Haywah's narration explicitly has the words "fitnat al-qabr".
