Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2444

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) that, when setting out against the Kharijites, he wrote a letter in which (it was written that) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for well-being; but when you do meet them, be patient and steadfast, and know that Paradise is beneath the shade of the swords."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and on account of Mahbub bin Musa the chain is qawi (strong).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq al-Fazari is Ibrahim bin Muhammad, and Salim Abu al-Nadr is Salim bin Abi Umayyah.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (2631) narrated it with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it through two routes from Abu Ishaq al-Fazari in four places.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (1742) narrated it through the chain of Ibn Jurayj from Musa bin 'Uqbah.
Important point: Imam al-Hakim's bringing it as meeting the condition of al-Bukhari and Muslim is an oversight, because it is already found in both of them.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it via Abu Hayyan al-Taymi, with mention of an unnamed "shaykh in Madinah".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Imam Abu Hatim, this unnamed Madinan shaykh is "Abu al-Nadr" (Salim).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan al-Thawri also thought so, but Abu Hayyan mistakenly named the recipient of the letter 'Ubayd Allah bin Ma'mar, whereas the correct name is "'Umar bin 'Ubayd Allah bin Ma'mar al-Taymi".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A jayyid supporting report for the sentence "Paradise is beneath the shade of swords" has passed earlier at number (2419) from the narration of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: The "Haruriyyah" are the group of Khawarij who fought 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); they are attributed to a place near Kufah called "Harura'", where they first gathered.
