مَنْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ الْقَتْلَ مِنْ عِنْدِ نَفْسِهِ صَادِقًا ثُمَّ مَاتَ أَوْ قُتِلَ ، فَلَهُ أَجْرُ الشَّهِيدِ
Whoever sincerely asks Allah to be killed in His path and then dies or is killed has the reward of a martyr

وحدَّثَناه أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، أخبرنا محمد بن عبد الله بن عبد الحَكَم، أخبرنا ابن وهب، حدثني عبد الرحمن بن شُريح، أنَّ سَهْل بن أبي أُمامة بن سَهْل بن حُنَيف حدثه عن أبيه، عن جده، أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ قال: "مَن سألَ اللهَ الشهادةَ بصِدْقٍ، بَلَّغَهُ اللهُ منازِلَ الشُّهداءِ وإن ماتَ على فِراشِه" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sincerely asks Allah for martyrdom, Allah will raise him to the ranks of the martyrs even if he dies on his bed."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(2) إسناده صحيح. ابن وهب: هو عبد الله.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Ibn Wahb is 'Abd Allah bin Wahb.
وأخرجه مسلم (1909)، وأبو داود (1520) وابن ماجه (2797)، والنسائي (4355)، وابن حبان (3192) من طرق عن عبد الله بن وهب، بهذا الإسناد. فاستدراك الحاكم له ذهولٌ منه.
Reference / Source: Muslim (1909), Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it via Ibn Wahb.
Important point: Imam al-Hakim's including it (in al-Mustadrak) is an oversight on his part, because it is already in Sahih Muslim.
وأخرجه الترمذي (1653) من طريق القاسم بن كثير، عن عبد الرحمن بن شريح، به. وقال: حسن غريب.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it via al-Qasim bin Kathir from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Shurayh and called it "hasan gharib".
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Ibn Wahb is 'Abd Allah bin Wahb.
