It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him): We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Battle of Tabuk, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "If you wish, shall I tell you of the head of the whole matter, its pillar and the peak of its summit?" I said: Certainly, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer, and the peak of its summit is jihad."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih and its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Maymun bin Abi Shabib's narration from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) is mursal (as Ibn Abi Hatim said), but it is sahih on account of other corroborations. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (22068) narrated it through the chain of al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah from Maymun bin Abi Shabib. Note / Clarification: This hadith will come later in detail via al-A'mash at number (3590). Imam al-Daraqutni graded it sahih on the basis of the narration of al-Hakam and Habib from Maymun. Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it hasan sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Imam al-Mundhiri, although Abu Wa'il was a contemporary of Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), his hearing from him is doubtful, because Abu Wa'il was in Kufah and Mu'adh in Syria. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ahmad also narrated it through 'Urwah bin al-Nazzal, but the narrator 'Urwah is unknown (majhul). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also narrated via Shahr bin Hawshab from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). Shahr is hasan in hadith in corroborations, and Ayyub bin Kurayz corroborated him, but Ayyub is unknown. Important point: Overall, on the basis of all these routes this hadith is sahih, even though each chain on its own has some criticism.
