Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2438

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioning the martyrs of Uhud, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! I wished that I too had been left (martyred) with my companions at the foot of the mountain."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: On account of Muhammad bin Ishaq (Ibn Yasar al-Muttalibi) this chain is hasan.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (15025) narrated it through the chain of Ya'qub bin Ibrahim bin Sa'd from his father from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It has the words "nuhs al-jabal", meaning the foot of the mountain; most copies have this, but al-Hakim's narration has "hidn".
Note / Clarification: "Hidn al-jabal" refers to what surrounds a mountain or its base. This word will come again at hadith (4364), where, with "nuhs al-jabal", the explanation of "ghudirtu" is given as "I was killed (with them)".
