Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 243

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "I know a word which no servant says truly from his heart and then dies upon it, except that the Fire is made forbidden for him; (and that word) is 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no true god except Allah)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with these words or with this chain. However, they agreed on the lengthy hadith of Mahmud bin al-Rabi' from Itban bin Malik, at the end of which are the words: "And indeed Allah has made the Fire forbidden for whoever says 'La ilaha illallah'." They also recorded it through the chain of Shu'bah, Bishr bin al-Mufaddal and Khalid al-Hadhdha', via al-Walid Abu Bishr, from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "Whoever dies knowing that there is no god but Allah enters Paradise", and there is no mention of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is qawi (strong).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sa'id is Sa'id bin Abi Arubah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it (204) through the route of Muhammad bin Yahya al-Azdi, from Abd al-Wahhab bin Ata' al-Khaffaf, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: See the narration of Abd al-Wahhab that is coming further on with the author (al-Hakim) at number (1314).

Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it under (425) and Muslim under (657) (263).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have "wa Khalid" (and Khalid), whereas the correct version is "an Khalid al-Hadhdha'" (from Khalid al-Hadhdha'), because Shu'bah and Bishr both narrate this report from Khalid.
Reference / Source: The narration of Shu'bah is in the "Musnad Ahmad" (vol. 1, hadith 464) and Sunan al-Nasa'i (10886, 10887), while the narration of Bishr bin al-Mufaddal is in Sahih Muslim (26) and Ibn Hibban (201). Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah also narrated it from Khalid al-Hadhdha' in Sahih Muslim (26).
Important point: The author's statement that "the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) also narrated it" is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part.
