Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2411

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the year of the Battle of Tabuk the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people while leaning against the trunk of a date palm. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of the best of people and the worst of people? Indeed, among the best of people is a man who worked in the path of Allah on the back of his horse, or on the back of his camel, or on his own feet, until death came to him. And among the worst of people is a sinful, reckless man who reads the Book of Allah but does not refrain from anything (of its warnings and commands)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grammar: This name appears here and in the following sentence in the "marfu'" (nominative) form, whereas by rule it should be "mansub" (accusative). According to al-Sindi, it is either mansub with the alif left out in writing (which was common among them), or it is marfu' with the implied sense: "indeed the matter is that among the best of people is a man".

Grading: Due to its other chain and its supporting reports this is a "hasan hadith", although in this particular chain Abu al-Khattab is an unknown (majhul) narrator.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i narrated it via the route of al-Layth bin Sa'd.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn al-Mubarak's narration is munqati' (disconnected), because Sa'id bin Abi Hilal did not meet Abu Sa'id al-Khudri.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for its first part is the narration in al-Bukhari (907) that whoever's feet become dusty in the path of Allah, Allah will make the Fire forbidden for him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the second part is the narration of al-Bukhari and Muslim concerning the Khawarij, that they will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes through the game.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Similar narrations are also reported from Sahl bin Hunayf in al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Reference / Source: Similar wording is also reported from Ibn Mas'ud in Sahih Muslim (822).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The long hadith of Samurah bin Jundub in al-Bukhari (1386) (the dream of the Messenger) also supports it, especially concerning the man whose head was being crushed because he recited the Qur'an but did not act upon it.
Linguistic explanation: "Mudif zahrahu" means leaning back with one's back supported.
Linguistic explanation: "La yar'awi" means not refraining, or not taking heed of admonition.
