It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of the best of people in rank and station?" The Companions said: Certainly, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man who holds the reins of his horse in the path of Allah until he is martyred or death comes to him. Shall I not tell you of the one who comes next to him (in excellence)? A man who lives secluded (from habitation) in a mountain pass, establishes the prayer, gives the zakah and bears witness that there is no god but Allah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: "The hadith is sahih"; on account of Fulayh bin Sulayman the chain is "hasan", and it also has other supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it via the route of Fulayh.
Reference / Source: This narration is reported in Sahih Muslim (1889) and other books through various routes from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him); the chain of Abu Wahb's narration contains Abu Ma'shar Najih al-Sindi, who is weak, and the narration of Shihab bin Mudlij contains an unknown woman.
Juristic point: These narrations will come at number (2491) and elsewhere. According to al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab, this ruling is specific to times of tribulation (fitan), not to ordinary circumstances.
