Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 234

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): What reply did your Lord give you concerning intercession? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! I thought that you would be the first to ask me about this, because I had seen your eagerness and longing for knowledge. By the One in whose Hand is my soul! The people's crowding at the gate of Paradise (because of their great numbers) concerns me more than the completion of my intercession. My intercession is for everyone who testifies sincerely that there is no god but Allah, in such a way that his heart confirms his tongue and his tongue confirms his heart."
The chain of this hadith is sahih, and Mu'awiyah bin Mu'attib is an Egyptian from among the Tabi'in. Bukhari recorded this hadith through Amr bin Abi Amr (the freed slave of al-Muttalib), in which Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) asks who will be the most fortunate of people with his intercession; although its wording is different, its meaning is close to this.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "fit to be graded hasan" because of Mu'awiyah bin Mu'attib, as we have explained in the commentary on the "Musnad Ahmad" (vol. 13, hadith 8070), where Ahmad narrated it from Hashim bin al-Qasim and Abu Salamah al-Khuza'i, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it (6466) through the route of Amr bin al-Harith, from Yazid bin Abi Habib.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in abridged form (vol. 16, hadith 10713) through the route of Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far, from Yazid bin Abi Habib, from Mu'awiyah bin Mu'attib.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The name of Salim bin Abi Salim has dropped out of this chain, whereas the correct version is to retain his name in the chain.

Reference / Source: It is recorded in the "Sahih" of al-Bukhari at numbers (99) and (6570).
