It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Allah Almighty twice.
In this chapter the two Shaykhs relied on the reports of Sayyidah Aishah, Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Jibril (peace be upon him) (during the Mi'raj); but all these reports which I have mentioned (concerning the vision of Allah) are, every one of them, sahih. And Allah knows best.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) This chain is "hasan" because of Abu Hudhayfah (who is Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq bin al-Hasan: he is al-Harbi; Sufyan: he is (Sufyan) al-Thawri; and Ata': he is Ibn Abi Rabah. Reference / Source: Ibn Mandah narrated it in "al-Iman" (759) and al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (912) through two routes from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain. In one of the two routes the wording is: "He saw Him with his heart twice." And Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated it in "al-Sunnah" (1138) through the route of Musa bin Tariq, from Ibn Jurayj, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it, Ibn Jurayj explicitly states that he heard (sama') it from Ata'. Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/1956) and Muslim (176, 285, 286) narrated it through the route of Abu al-Aliyah from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). In Ahmad the wording is "bi-qalbihi" (with his heart), and in Muslim "bi-fu'adihi" (with his heart).
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts this word is "i'tamadahu" (with the ha'), whereas the correct form is "i'tamada" (with the ha' omitted); it is likewise in al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
Reference / Source: (2) The hadith of A'ishah is in al-Bukhari (3234, 4855) and Muslim (177); the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud is in al-Bukhari (3232) and Muslim (174); and by the hadith of Abu Dharr he perhaps means the one Muslim (178) narrated, that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Did you see your Lord? He said: "He is light; how could I see Him?" As for the hadith of Ubayy bin Ka'b, we have not come across it. (175). Note / Clarification: The author (al-Hakim) omitted mentioning the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the words of Allah: {And he certainly saw him in another descent}; (Abu Hurayrah) said: "He saw Jibril." This hadith is in Sahih Muslim at number (175).
