Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 215

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah Almighty created Adam (peace be upon him) and breathed the soul into him, he sneezed and, by the permission of Allah, said 'Alhamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah). His Lord said: O Adam! Your Lord has had mercy on you. Then Allah said: O Adam! Go to that group of angels who are sitting there and say 'Assalamu alaykum' (Peace be upon you). He went (and greeted them), and the angels replied 'Wa alaykas-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh' (And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings). Then he returned to his Lord, and Allah said: This is the greeting of you and your offspring among one another. Then Allah, with both His Hands closed, said: Choose whichever of them you wish. Adam (peace be upon him) said: I choose the Right Hand of my Lord, and both Hands of my Lord are right (blessed and full of good). Then Allah opened His Hand, and in it were Adam and all his offspring (descendants). Adam (peace be upon him) said: O my Lord! Who are these? Allah said: These are your offspring. The lifespan of every human being was written between his two eyes. Adam (peace be upon him) saw among them a man who was the most radiant of them, but only forty years had been written for him. Adam (peace be upon him) said: O Lord! Increase his lifespan. Allah said: This is what has been written for him. Adam (peace be upon him) said: I have given him sixty years from my own lifespan. Allah said: That is your choice. Then Adam (peace be upon him) remained in Paradise for as long as Allah willed, then he was sent down from there to the earth and began counting the days of his life. When the Angel of Death came to him, Adam (peace be upon him) said: You have come early; a thousand years were written for me. The angel said: Yes, but you gave sixty years of your lifespan to your son Dawud (peace be upon him). So Adam (peace be upon him) denied it (out of human nature), and his offspring also began to deny; and he forgot, and his offspring also began to forget. From that day, writing and witnesses were commanded (in dealings)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, because he used al-Harith bin Abd al-Rahman as evidence. Narrators other than Safwan have also narrated it from him, but I mentioned Safwan's chain because it is a high (short) chain.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah except al-Harith bin Abd al-Rahman, who is saduq but prone to errors.
Technical note: There is disagreement over whether the story of the offspring of Adam (peace be upon him) being shown to him is marfu' or mawquf; however, the part about the sneeze and the greeting is "sahih".
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3368), Ibn Hibban (6167) and al-Nasa'i (9975) narrated it through the chain of Safwan bin Isa.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan".
Important point: This same narration will come again with the same chain further on at number (7874), abridged to the story of the sneeze.
Grading: In the narration of Abu Ya'la, Isma'il bin Rafi' is "da'if and munkar al-hadith".
Technical note: Muhammad bin Ajlan contradicted this and reported it as the saying of Abd Allah bin Salam (mawquf), and according to al-Nasa'i this "mawquf" version is the correct one.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Ma'shar Najih al-Sindi also contradicted all of them and reported it as "mawquf" on Abu Hurayrah.
Grading: Abu Ma'shar is "layyin al-hadith" (weak), but he can be taken into consideration in supporting reports.
Technical note / Criticism: Al-Nasa'i called the route of Abu Khalid al-Ahmar "munkar", meaning that these words are not preserved (mahfuz) through this chain.
Important point: The part about the offspring of Adam will come at numbers (3296) and (4177) through the route of Hisham bin Sa'd, although there is some weakness (lin) in Hisham.
Reference / Source: The story of the sneeze on its own was narrated by Ibn Hibban (6164) through the chain of Hafs bin Asim, which is "hasan" in corroborations.
Reference / Source: The story of the greeting was narrated by Ahmad, al-Bukhari (3326), Muslim (2841) and Ibn Hibban through the sahih chain of Hammam bin Munabbih from Abu Hurayrah.
Scholarly guidance: For the story of the sneeze, see the narrations of Ibn Abbas (number 3073) and Anas (number 7875), both of which are "mawquf".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Ibn Abbas about the offspring of Adam is in the Musnad of Ahmad (2270), but its chain contains Ibn Jud'an, who is da'if.

Reference / Source: The narration of Abu Khalid al-Ahmar with al-Nasa'i extends only to the story of the sneeze and the greeting, whereas al-Tabari related it in full detail in his "Tarikh" (1/155).
