Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) It is thus in the manuscripts; the printed edition has "Muhammad bin 'Ubayd Allah", and in manuscript (B) the divine name (Allah) was inserted as an addition. We could not identify this Muhammad. As for (the author's shaykh) "Abu Abd Allah Muhammad bin Ya'qub", he is al-Akhram, a well-known hafiz, who has a "Mustakhraj" on "Sahih Muslim"; see his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 15/ 466.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) "Abd Allah bin Salimah" is in reality two narrators: (1) Abd Allah bin Salimah al-Muradi, and (2) Abd Allah bin Salimah al-Hamdani Abu al-'Aliyah. Among those who distinguished between them are Ibn Ma'in, Ibn Numayr, al-Bukhari, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban, al-Daraqutni and Ibn Makula, while Ahmad bin Hanbal and Muslim held them to be one person.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among those who distinguished between them and gave a thorough explanation of it is "Abu Ahmad al-Hakim" (the shaykh of the author). He said in his book "al-Kuna", as quoted from him by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib": "Abd Allah bin Salimah" is a Muradi who narrates from Sa'd, 'Ali, Ibn Mas'ud and Safwan bin 'Assal, and from him narrate 'Amr bin Murrah and Abu al-Zubayr; his hadith is not sound. Whereas for "Abd Allah bin Salimah al-Hamdani" only his own statement is known, and no narrator from him is known other than "Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i". Then he said, in meaning: The mistake occurred with those who made them one person, through the kunyah of whoever gave al-Muradi the kunyah "Abu al-'Aliyah", whereas it is the kunyah of al-Hamdani; and I know of no one who gave al-Muradi a kunyah. Muslim and others made a mistake in this, and Allah knows best.
Grading: We say: Regarding Abd Allah bin Salimah al-Muradi, the narrator from him, 'Amr bin Murrah — who knew him best of all people — said: "Abd Allah bin Salimah used to narrate to us, and we would recognise (some of it) and reject (some of it)". Abu Hatim likewise said: "You recognise (some) and reject (some)". Al-Bukhari said: "He is not corroborated in his hadith". Ibn Hibban said: "He makes mistakes". However, al-'Ijli and Ya'qub bin Shaybah spoke well of him and declared him trustworthy, and Ibn 'Adi said: "I hope there is no harm in him".
Grading: We say: The summary about him is that his hadith should not be accepted except where he is corroborated. This hadith which the author recorded is among his solitary narrations (afrad), in which no one corroborated him. Al-Nasa'i said about it: "This is a munkar hadith", and Ibn Kathir said in his "Tafsir": "It is a problematic hadith; Abd Allah bin Salimah has some weakness in his memory, and they have criticised him."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Perhaps he confused the "nine signs" with the "ten words" (the Ten Commandments), for these are commandments in the Torah which have no connection with establishing the proof against Pharaoh, and Allah knows best.
