Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2083

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Indeed, everything has a peak, and the peak of the Qur'an is Surah al-Baqarah; and indeed, when the devil hears Surah al-Baqarah being recited, he leaves the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is being recited.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and it has also been narrated as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) with a similar chain.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi". There is nothing wrong with its narrators, but there is disagreement over whether it is "marfu'" (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) or "mawquf" (a saying of a Companion). The preferred view is that it is "mawquf", because Hammad bin Zayd and Hammad bin Salamah also narrated it as mawquf.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Salamah bin Kuhayl, Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i and other senior narrators narrated it as "mawquf" on Ibn Mas'ud. Although it is mawquf, according to Burhan al-Biqa'i it has the ruling of "marfu'", because such things (reports of the unseen) cannot be said from one's own opinion.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it through this same chain of Imam al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: Ibn Wahb, Ibn al-Durays, al-Tabarani, al-Jawraqani and al-Darimi narrated it through the routes of Hammad bin Zayd and Hammad bin Salamah. The narration of Hammad bin Salamah has only the first part, without mention of the devil fleeing.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq, al-Tabarani, Abu Nu'aym, Shu'bah and Fitr bin Khalifah narrated it through Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i as "mawquf". It mentions only the second part of the hadith (the devil's flight).
Variation in the chain: Muhammad bin 'Ajlan, as found with al-Nasa'i and al-Bayhaqi, contradicted the others by narrating it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i as "marfu'".
Variation in the chain: Ibrahim al-Hajari narrated it as "mawquf" on Ibn Mas'ud (without the first part).
Criticism of a narrator: Imam al-Baghawi narrated it by way of Ibrahim al-Hajari as "marfu'", but Ibrahim al-Hajari is a "layyin" (soft, weak) narrator and is known for raising hadiths to the Prophet (marfu').
Repetition: This narration will come later as marfu' by way of 'Amr bin Abi Qays.
Repetition: At number (2087) it will come as marfu' by way of Za'idah bin Qudamah.
Repetition: At numbers (2086) and (3066) it will come as mawquf by way of Salamah bin Kuhayl.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The previous hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) supports it; see all its supporting reports there.
