Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2082

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In Surah al-Baqarah there is a verse which is the chief of all the verses of the Qur'an; it is not recited in a house in which there is a devil except that he leaves it; and that is Ayat al-Kursi."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. The two Shaykhs did not abandon narrating from Hakim bin Jubayr because of weakness in his narrations; rather, they abandoned him because of his extremism in Shi'ism.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Like the previous narration, this too is "hasan li-ghayrihi". Sufyan is Ibn 'Uyaynah. It is also in Musnad al-Humaydi (994).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it by way of Za'idah bin Qudamah, but it does not contain the words "it is not recited in a house".
Repetition: It will come again at number (3063).
Reference / Source: The part "Ayat al-Kursi is the chief of the verses of the Qur'an" will come at number (3067).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On the greatness of Ayat al-Kursi, the hadith of Ubayy bin Ka'b in Sahih Muslim (which mentions striking him on the chest) is a supporting report.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On the devil leaving the house, the mu'allaq narration of Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari (his story with the devil) is a supporting report, in which the devil himself said that no devil comes near the one who recites Ayat al-Kursi.
General principle: The same is established about the whole of Surah al-Baqarah: a devil does not enter the house in which it is recited.
Reference / Source: In Sahih Muslim it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "The devil flees from the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited".

Important point: Despite his extreme Shi'i leanings, Hakim (bin Jubayr) narrates reports that indicate the virtue of Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Imam al-Tabarani transmitted by his route that he said to 'Ali bin Husayn: I testify concerning 'Abd Khayr that he told me he heard 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) say on the pulpit: "The best of this Ummah after its Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is Abu Bakr, then 'Umar". The chain up to Hakim is sahih.
