Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 208

It is narrated from Tariq bin Shihab that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Syria, and Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with us. When they reached a place where water was crossing (the path), while Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was riding his she-camel, he dismounted, took off his two leather socks and placed them on his shoulder, then took hold of his she-camel's rein and began leading it through the water. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in astonishment): O Commander of the Believers! Are you doing this, taking off your leather socks and placing them on your shoulder, holding your she-camel's rein yourself and leading it through the water? I do not like the people of this town to see you in this state. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Alas! O Abu Ubaydah, if only someone other than you had said this, I would have made him an example for the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The truth is that we were the most abased of people, and Allah Almighty honoured us through Islam. So whenever we seek honour in anything other than that through which Allah honoured us, Allah will abase us (again)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), because both of them used Ayyub bin A'idh al-Ta'i and all its other narrators as evidence, but they did not record it. It also has a supporting report (shahid) from the hadith of al-A'mash, through Qays bin Muslim.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1) في النسخ الخطية: لو يَقُل، على جزم "يقل" بلَوْ، والجادَّة ما أثبتنا، والجزم بلو خلاف الراجح المشهور عند جمهور النحاة، وجَوَّز بعضهم الجزم بها عند الضرورة، انظر "مغني اللبيب" لابن هشام 1/ 271، و"خزانة الأدب" للبغدادي 11/ 298 - 301.
Scholarly and grammatical point: In the manuscripts the verb after "law" is read in the jussive ("law yaqul"), but the well-known grammatical rule is against this. Only some grammarians permitted it in cases of necessity.
Reference: For further detail, see "Mughni al-Labib" and "Khizanat al-Adab".
وقوله: "أوّهْ" بفتح الهمزة وتشديد الواو وكسرها أو فتحها وهاء ساكنة: كلمة تقال عند الشِّكاية والتوجُّع والتحزُّن. وقيل: ساكنة الواو مكسورة الهاء، وربما قلبوا الواو ألفًا فقالوا: آهِ من كذا.
Note / Clarification: The word "awwah" (with a fathah on the hamzah and a shaddah on the waw) is an expression said when complaining, or expressing pain or grief. There are various dialectal forms of its pronunciation; sometimes the waw is changed to an alif and it is said "aahi".

(2) إسناده صحيح. سفيان: هو ابن عُيينة.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: The narrator Sufyan is "Sufyan bin Uyaynah".
وأخرجه ابن المبارك (584)، وأبو داود (69)، وابن أبي الدنيا (117) - ثلاثتهم في "الزهد"- والمحاملي في "أماليه" (239)، وأبو نعيم في "الحلية" 1/ 47، والبيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (7847)، وابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 5/ 44 من طرق عن سفيان بن عيينة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Mubarak, Abu Dawud and Ibn Abi al-Dunya (all three in their books "al-Zuhd"), as well as al-Mahamili, Abu Nu'aym and al-Bayhaqi, narrated it with this same chain of Sufyan bin Uyaynah.
وانظر ما بعده، وسيأتي برقم (4531) من طريق الحميدي عن سفيان.
Important point: See the discussion following it; this narration will come further on at number (4531) through the route of al-Humaydi from Sufyan.
