Book of Faith
مَنْ تَرَكَ اللِّبَاسَ وَهُوَ قَادِرٌ عَلَيْهِ تَوَاضُعًا لِلَّهِ خَيَّرَهُ اللَّهُ فِي حُلَلِ الْإِيمَانِ
Whoever gives up fine clothing out of humility to Allah while able to afford it, Allah will let him choose from the garments of faith

حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا الرَّبيع بن سليمان، حدثنا عبد الله بن وَهْب، أخبرني يحيى بن أيوب، عن زَبَّانَ بن فائدٍ، عن سهل بن معاذ بن أنس الجُهني، عن أبيه، عن رسول الله ﷺ قال: "مَن ترك اللباس وهو قادرٌ عليه تواضعًا لله، دَعَاهُ اللهُ على رؤوس الخلائق حتى يُخيَّرَ في حُلَل الإيمان يَلبَسُ أَيُّها شاء" (3).

It is narrated from Sahl bin Mu'adh bin Anas al-Juhani, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever gives up wearing (fine and costly) clothing out of humility and lowliness for the sake of Allah, while he is fully able to (wear) it, Allah Almighty will call him (on the Day of Resurrection) before all of creation and give him the choice to wear whichever of the (Paradise) garments of faith he wishes."

(3) حديث حسن، وهذا إسناد ضعيف لضعف زَبَّان بن فائد، وقد تابعه أبو مرحوم عبد الرحيم ابن ميمون ـ وهو حسن الحديث في المتابعات والشواهد - فيما سيأتي عند المصنف نفسه برقم (7559)، ولم ينفرد به زبان كما زعم هنا. وسهل بن معاذ حسن الحديث.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Zabban bin Fa'id is da'if, Abu Marhum Abd al-Rahim (who is hasan al-hadith in corroborations) corroborated him, which will come at number (7559). Therefore it is wrong to say that Zabban is alone in this narration. Sahl bin Mu'adh is also a narrator who is hasan al-hadith.
وأخرجه أحمد 24 / (15619) من طريق ابن لهيعة، عن زبّان، بهذا الإسناد - بأطول مما هنا.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (24/15619) through the chain of Ibn Lahi'ah from Zabban in greater detail.
قوله: "من ترك اللباس" يعني: الفاره الفاخر منه.
Note / Clarification: "Whoever gives up clothing" refers to giving up very costly, showy clothing out of humility.
وقوله: "في حُلل الإيمان" أي: حلل أهل الإيمان.
Note / Clarification: "In the garments of faith" refers to the garments of honour prepared (in the Hereafter) for the people of faith.
