It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us on a military expedition. We passed by the people of some dwellings and asked them for hospitality, but they refused. We camped in the open, and meanwhile their chief was stung (by some venomous creature). They came to us and asked: "Is there anyone among you who performs ruqyah?" I said: "Yes, I perform ruqyah." They said: "Then perform ruqyah on our companion." I said: "No. We asked you for hospitality and you refused." They said: "Then we will give you (a fee)," and they fixed thirty sheep for us. The narrator says: I went to him and began wiping my hand over him, reciting the Opening of the Book (al-Fatihah) and repeating it again and again until he recovered. We took the sheep, then we said: "We have taken them although we do not know how to perform ruqyah properly; we will not eat them until we ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So we came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned the whole incident. He (peace and blessings be upon him) began to say: "How did you know that it (Surah al-Fatihah) is a ruqyah?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I did not know that it is a ruqyah; rather it was something that Allah put into my heart." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat them, and set aside a share for me along with you."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Jarir is Ibn 'Abd al-Hamid, al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran, and Abu Nadrah is al-Mundhir bin Malik bin Qit'ah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group of thiqah narrators (Shu'bah, Abu 'Awanah and others) contradicted al-A'mash; they mentioned "Abu al-Mutawakkil" instead of "Abu Nadrah". Abu Zur'ah, Ibn Majah and al-Daraqutni supported them, but according to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar both chains are preserved (correct), because al-A'mash's narration has some additions in the text that are not found with the others. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it through the chain of 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah from Jarir. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i narrated it through various routes of al-A'mash. Note / Clarification: In "naj'alu lakum", the word "ju'l" means the wage or recompense given in return for some work or statement.
Note / Clarification: The author (al-Hakim) attributed it only to Muslim, although it is also in al-Bukhari by way of Abu 'Awanah and Shu'bah.
(2201) (66). Reference / Source: It is in al-Bukhari (5007), and al-Hakim overlooked that it is also in Muslim (2201).
