Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2043

It is narrated from Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) that, in explaining the verse "And We have certainly given you seven of the oft-repeated (verses)" [Surah al-Hijr: 87], he said: It refers to "Umm al-Qur'an" (Surah al-Fatihah). And Sa'id bin Jubayr recited it in front of me and counted Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) as the seventh verse. Sa'id bin Jubayr said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) had recited it in front of him in the same way as I have recited it in front of you, then he said that Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim is the seventh verse. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah Almighty has brought this (surah and the tasmiyah) out especially for you, and did not make it manifest for anyone before you.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts it is written "wa qara'aha 'alayya Ubayy", which is wrong; the correct wording has been restored according to "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" and al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) Its chain is weak because Abd al-Aziz bin Jurayj, the father of Ibn Jurayj, is weak. He is alone in narrating this report from Ibn Abbas, and others contradicted him, as will come at no. (3393). Others narrated it from Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn Abbas that "al-Sab' al-Mathani" means the seven long surahs. Their list from Sa'id bin Jubayr is narrated as: al-Baqarah, Al Imran, al-Nisa', al-Ma'idah, al-An'am, al-A'raf and Yunus, whereas in al-Hakim (3393) Surat "al-Kahf" is in place of "Yunus".
Important point: Abu al-Muthanna al-Anbari is Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna, and Hajjaj bin Muhammad is al-Missisi al-A'war.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2117) through Abu Abdullah al-Hakim and others, from Abu al-Abbas, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Ubayd (p. 222), Ibn Bishran (1210), al-Bayhaqi (2/44), Ibn Abd al-Barr (p. 277) and Diya' al-Maqdisi (10/239-240) recorded it through the route of Hajjaj bin Muhammad. ¤ ¤ Also al-Tabari (14/55) and Diya' (10/238) recorded it from Sufyan al-Thawri, al-Tabari from Yahya bin Sa'id and Ibn Wahb, al-Tahawi (3/244) from Abu Asim, and Diya' (10/239) from Hammad bin Zayd; all of them narrated it from Ibn Jurayj.
Details of the narration: This hadith has other routes too, which Imam al-Hakim will present after this route.
General principle: It is authentically established that "al-Sab' al-Mathani" means Surat al-Fatihah, as narrated from others besides Ibn Abbas; for example the hadith of Abu Sa'id bin al-Mu'alla in al-Bukhari (4474) and the hadith of Ubayy bin Ka'b which will come at no. (2071).

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts, due to corruption, this name became "Amr" (with an added waw), whereas the correct name is "Uthman bin Umar bin Faris al-Abdi".
