It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any of you goes to his bed, an angel and a devil rush towards him. The devil says: Begin (your affair) with evil. And the angel says: Begin with good. So if he remembers Allah, the devil goes away and the angel spends the night guarding him. And when he wakes up, an angel and a devil again rush towards him. The devil says: Begin with evil. And the angel says: Begin with good. So if he says: 'Alhamdu lillahi alladhi radda ilayya nafsi ba'da mawtiha wa lam yumitha fi nawmiha, alhamdu lillahi alladhi yumsiku al-sama'a an taqa'a 'ala al-ardi illa bi-idhnihi, inna Allaha bil-nasi la-Ra'ufun Rahim, alhamdu lillahi alladhi yuhyi al-mawta wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir' (All praise is for Allah who returned my soul to me after its death (sleep) and did not cause it to die in its sleep; all praise is for Allah who holds back the heaven from falling upon the earth, except by His permission (can that happen); indeed, 'Allah is Most Kind and Most Merciful to people' [Surah al-Hajj: 65]; all praise is for Allah who gives life to the dead, and He has power over all things), then if he falls from his mount in that state and dies, he dies a martyr, and if he stands up and prays, he prays a prayer full of virtues."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar it is "hasan gharib". Its narrators are trustworthy except Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz, about whom there is criticism, but he is accepted in corroborating chains. Ibn Hajar called it hasan rather than sahih because of the 'an'anah of Abu al-Zubayr al-Makki, whereas Imam al-Mundhiri declared its chain sahih. Discussion of the chain: In one narration of Imam al-Nasa'i it is "mawquf" (a saying of Jabir), but the narration of Mu'adh bin Fadalah, which is "marfu'", is more reliable, because Imam al-Bukhari used him as proof. According to Ibn Hajar the chain of the marfu' narration is stronger. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban recorded it as marfu' through the route of Hammad bin Salamah. The other students of Hajjaj al-Sawwaf also narrated it as marfu'. Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i also recorded it through the route of al-Mughirah bin Muslim.
