Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2033

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructing these words for times of fright: 'A'udhu bi-kalimati Allahi al-tammati min ghadabihi wa min 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazati al-shayatini wa an yahdurun' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and from His punishment, from the evil of His servants, from the whisperings of the devils, and from their coming to me). The narrator said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to teach these words to those of his children who had reached understanding, so that they would recite them when going to sleep, and for the children who had not yet reached the age (of understanding), he would write these words down and hang them around their necks.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and it is connected (muttasil) at the point of disagreement.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" on the basis of its supporting reports. Apart from the 'an'anah of Muhammad bin Ishaq, there is no objection to its narrators. In the chain of the author (al-Hakim) the words "from his grandfather from Abdullah bin Amr" are unusual. According to Imam al-Dhahabi, when Amr bin Shu'ayb says "from his grandfather", he means his great-grandfather Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As. Shu'ayb's hearing from his grandfather Abdullah is established, because he grew up an orphan in his care and also travelled with him.
Technical note: This (explicit mention of Ibn Amr in the chain) occurs only with the author and Ibn Battah, whereas other hadith scholars reported only "from his grandfather", which is evidence that an error (wahm) occurred here in the author's narration.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Da'awat al-Kabir" (429) through the author's own route and then said (expressing surprise at the chain): "This is how I found it in my book!"
Reference / Source: Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i recorded it through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq from Amr bin Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather. Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib".
Technical note: In one narration of Imam al-Nasa'i the background of this supplication is given as Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) becoming frightened in his sleep, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him this supplication: "Bismillah, I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah"
Grading: A group of hadith scholars named the person concerned in this story as "al-Walid bin al-Walid", the brother of Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). This seems the more likely view, because a large group of hafiz narrators (Shu'bah, Yahya al-Qattan and others) narrated it under the name of al-Walid bin al-Walid, and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said it is a mursal with a sahih chain.
Discussion of the chain: Imam Malik alone narrated it in "al-Muwatta'" under the name of Khalid bin al-Walid, but the majority of hadith scholars are in favour of al-Walid bin al-Walid, and that is the reliable view.
Discussion of the chain: In one narration of Ayyub bin Musa the name of Khalid bin al-Walid also appears, but this is probably an error (wahm) by one of the narrators.
Clarification: Other narrations about Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) also mention his being frightened, but there the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him a different and longer supplication: "A'udhu bi-kalimat Allah al-tammat allati la yujawizuhunna barrun wa la fajir". It seems that the narrators mixed up these two separate stories and supplications, and for this reason they also attributed the supplication in the narration of Amr bin Shu'ayb to Khalid bin al-Walid. In any case, this hadith is "sahih" on the basis of other mursal supporting reports.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The mursal narration of Muhammad bin al-Munkadir (Ibn al-Sunni) is also a supporting report for it, which can be adduced in corroborating chains.
Note / Clarification: "Hamazat al-shayatin" means the whisperings and evil suggestions which the devil puts into a person's heart.
Note / Clarification: "Wa an yahdurun" means that they (the devils) come to me in order to cause me some kind of harm.
Note / Clarification: "The perfect words of Allah" (Kalimat Allah al-tammah) means speech in which there is no deficiency, or speech that is excellent, or speech whose ruling is firmly established, as the Qur'an mentions the good word being fulfilled for the Children of Israel.
