Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2024

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says, when lying down on his bed to sleep: 'Alhamdu lillahi alladhi kafani wa awani, alhamdu lillahi alladhi at'amani wa saqani, alhamdu lillahi alladhi manna 'alayya fa-afdal, Allahumma inni as'aluka bi'izzatika an tunajjiyani min al-nar' (All praise is for Allah who sufficed me and gave me shelter; all praise is for Allah who fed me and gave me drink; all praise is for Allah who bestowed favour upon me and gave generously; O Allah, I ask You by Your might to save me from the Fire), then he has praised Allah with all the praises of all of creation."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: It is "sahih" as an action of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Its chain is "hasan" on account of Khalaf bin al-Mundhir, because great hafiz narrators such as al-Tabudhaki narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban listed him as trustworthy. The narration of Ibn Umar also supports it.
Reference / Source: Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi recorded it in "al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah" (4/ 1574) through the chain of Imam al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" and Diya' al-Maqdisi through two routes from Musa bin Isma'il.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi recorded through the chain of Hammad bin Salamah from Thabit from Anas that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this supplication before sleeping: "All praise is for Allah who fed us, gave us drink, sufficed us and gave us shelter, for how many there are who have no one to suffice them and no one to shelter them."
Grading: The narration of Abdullah bin Umar (Musnad Ahmad, Abu Dawud) supports it, and its chain is "sahih". It also contains the addition of seeking refuge from the Fire.
